Potato: so common that almost transparent. Yet, when examined closely, it reveals itself as a context-rich plant. From the very beginning of its presence in Europe, it symbolizes colonial violence. Its journey continued through palace gardens, where efforts were made to prevent its widespread cultivation. When it finally reached the common people, it became the last resort for the starving "weak" and the excluded. Due to its minimal needs, it can be grown in the most hostile environments, even in conflict zones. In the 1930s, young pioneers from the He-Chalutz organization in Grochów kibbutz learned how to cultivate it. Potato represents hope for a new beginning – one that emerges from dirt, soil, clay, and hard work. Typically – female work. Gatherer’s gesture is primarily seen as feminine. That’s why in our endeavors we tried to look at the potato from a feminine perspective. A similar hope for a new beginning lies in the female body as well. Perhaps this is the reason why women view this plant in a different, more tender way, seeing its unexpected beauty – the same beauty and delicacy that resides in the female body, which carries the responsibility of generational continuity preservation. Women ¬– pillars. Caryatids. So we drew upon Yiddish women's poetry, read it to the potato fields and kept the entire exhibition in potato flower colors.
